// To Pablo, by Ai Weiwei – Valparaíso 2013

The project was developed in the Chilean city of Valparaiso, with instances in Santiago. in March 2013, of bridges & borders is inaugurated with the participation of 20 artists from Europe, the Americas and Asia, who develop for the project important specific urban interventions, performances and a great exhibition that was presented in the PCdV, Parque Cultural de Valparaiso (video review).

Ai Weiwei created for this project, a site-specific 900 square meters canvas installed against the wall of the former jail belonging to one of the main buildings of the PCdV, which linked his personal life with the city of Valparaiso and with the Chilean Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda.

Ai Weiwei’s work titled “To Pablo”, builds a bridge between Weiwei’s father Ai Qing and his old friend Neruda. Printed on the huge canvas is the image of the shore of the Senkaku’s chain main island, a disputed territory between Japan and China, overlaid by a verse of the poem “Cabo de Chile”, written by Ai Qing:

A man stands up
With a magnifying glass
Searching on the map
A place he has never been to

is Ai Qing’s verse, printed in Chinese and Spanish over his son’s immense artwork.

Ai Qing hosted Neruda on his many visits to China during the 1950s. These meetings gave way to a bond of admiration and friendship between the two poets. “To Pablo” speaks about bridges, borders, poetry and freedom.
