Gospel in the neighborhood 31
11 May 2019
Barrio 31, Av, Antartida & Calle 10, Buenos Aires, Argentina
KBB presents the Harlem Jubilee Singers in Barrio 31 on a sunny day. The group entered the neighborhood singing in order to encourage the neighbors to come to the stage installed in the local fair.
They performed Negro Spirituals, gospel songs, excerpts from Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts and popular songs linked to the genre, such as “Let it Be” by Lennon and McCartney, which Aretha Franklin treated closely to his origins as a gospel singer.
The day was so pleasant that the members of the choir stayed for lunch at the open-air restaurants in the Canchita. This led to interaction and conviviality with the locals, which for the choir and KBB was a purpose of this performance.
Harlem is a historical paradigm of neighbourhoods occupied by communities facing cultural, social and economic difficulties, which was a central reason for us to propose this cultural intervention.
Our thanks go to Mecenazgo Cultural, the Barrio 31 team, the Secretary of Social and Urban Integration, Arte en Barrios and the City’s Ministry of Culture
