About the artist:
Carlos Amorales was born in 1970 in Mexico City, where he lives and works. His work encompasses mixed media such as video, painting, animation, drawing, sculpture, and performance. Between images and signs, the artist constructs his own visual language, which culminates in a variety of themes and projects, from wrestling performances to drawings based on his vector editing database called “Liquid Archive,” created in 1998. Influenced by traditional, popular, and conceptual
representations, Amorales’s body of work emphasizes the symbolism and repetitiveness of the image.
He graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1995 and from the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1997. His notable exhibitions include: The Factory Carlos Amorales, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2019); Phantom Protest. Lille 3000 Eldorado (2019); L ORA DANNATA, Fondazione Adolfo Pini (2019); Axioms for Action, MUAC – Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City (2018); The Man Who Made All the Forbidden Things, Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA (2014); Germinal, Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2013); Supprimer, modifier et préserver, MAC/VAL, Vitry-sur-Seine, France (2011), among others.
He represented Mexico at the 57th Venice Biennale with the project Life in the Folds (2017). His work has been included in other biennials such as the 10th Shanghai Biennale, China (2013); the 2nd and 8th Berlin Biennale (2001 and 2014); the 11th Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates (2013); the 10th and 12th Havana Biennial, Cuba (2009 and 2015); the 5th SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul in Seoul, Korea (2008); and the 2nd Moscow International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Russia (2007).
