Through his patronage, Marcelo De Ridder left an invaluable legacy for Argentine culture: the creation of the Instituto de Arte Moderno (IAM) and the Premio De Ridder (PDR) for young artists. Both projects reflect the importance of art as a tool to connect Argentina with the international art movements of the time.
The dissolution of the IAM and the end of the PDR were clear signs that an era in Argentina had come to an end. These two volumes aim to preserve this remarkable cultural epic, disseminate it to current and future generations, and share this creative process driven by an artistic vision without boundaries and full of ambition.

The Instituto de Arte Moderno (1949-1959) was a vibrant cultural space that hosted a wide variety of events, from theater and visual arts to music, dance, and lectures. It served as a meeting point for both Argentine and international creators. Despite its brief existence, it left an indelible mark on the artistic scene of Buenos Aires, solidifying itself as a key chapter in the city’s cultural life. Its impact went beyond the arts, reflecting the profound political and social changes of the postwar period and their echoes in the international landscape.

This book brings together over a thousand notable figures who passed through the Instituto, including illustrious names such as Norma Aleandro, Emilio Alfaro, Violeta Antier, Beatriz Bonnet, Jorge Luis Borges, Nora Borges, Silvina Bullrich, Jorge D’Urbano, Giorgio De Chirico, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, María Fux, Alberto Ginastera, Alfredo Hlito, Enio Iommi, Ana Itelman, Francisco Javier, Mauricio Kagel, Wassily Kandinsky, Félix Labisse, Hernán Lavalle Cobo, Jorge Lavelli, Tomás Maldonado, Giacomo Manzù, Anna Marly, Duilio Marzio, Giorgio Morandi, Manuel Mujica Lainez, Victoria Ocampo, Miguel Ocampo, Juan Carlos Paz, Lidy Prati, the Végh Quartet, Ignacio Quirós, Ernesto Sabato, Pierre Soulages, Jean and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Rufino Tamayo, Pavel Tchelitchew, Joaquín Torres García, and Victor Vasarely, among others. Through its pages, it portrays a period when Argentine art was intensely dialoguing with the world, bringing new perspectives for creativity and thoughts.

The Premio De Ridder highlighted the exceptional creativity of young artists, both national and foreign, who were based in Argentina during the second half of the 20th century, showcasing how many overcame significant challenges to become the great masters we know today. This prestigious competition, held between 1949 and 1977, brought together over 400 participants who, through their work in disciplines such as painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving, and ceramics, ensured the continuity and generational renewal of art.

Among the selected artists are renowned figures such as Gabriela Aberastury, Mireya Baglietto, Jacques Bedel, Remo Bianchedi, Martín Blaszko, Oscar Bony, Ary Brizzi, Mildred Burton, Juan José Cambre, Diana Dowek, Fermín Eguía, Luis Frangella Moyano, Nicolás García Uriburu, Norberto Gómez, Alberto Greco, Narcisa Hirsch, Roberto Jacoby, Gyula Kosice, Rómulo Macció, Fernando Maza, Marta Minujín, Luis Felipe Noé, Alicia Orlandi, Martha Peluffo, Federico Peralta Ramos, Rogelio Polesello, Pablo Reinoso, Ingeborg Ringer, Juan Carlos Romero, Hugo Sbernini, Marcia Schvartz, Aldo Sessa, Pablo Suárez, Jorge Tapia, Victoria Trench, Jorge de la Vega, and Horacio Zabala, among others, who left an indelible mark on the history of Argentine art.
